I'm Su (short for Susan) and I live in Austin. I got an associate's degree a few years ago and then took a long break to work in medical billing. When I realized that's not how I wanted to spend the rest of my life, I applied to UT Austin to finish my BA, which I managed last May. Currently, I work in bicycle advocacy as the communications person, so I spend a lot of my time writing website articles, putting the monthly newsletter together, monitoring Facebook comments, and coming up with witty bicycle-related things to fill our Twitter feed.
My research interests are still fairly varied, since I'm so new to the program. I'm interested in non-profits, cycling issues, social media, and lifestyle choices (since I'm living car-free in Texas, you might say I'm into "unusual" lifestyles).
I'm taking this course to improve my own web savvy and development skills, since I'm tired of feeling like the communications person who is no good at communicating! Also, I have a couple of coworkers who tell me I "don't get" the web because I insist on subject-verb agreement and correct spelling on all BikeTexas publications. Yep, I've really had that conversation, seven or eight times now, so after taking this class I hope to have a stronger comeback than "Too bad!"
My previous web work is confined to my personal blog and the work I've done for BikeTexas, so I'm excited to do something different in class!
